If you are what you wear then cotton fabrics make you the most affable in networking and social circles.  If you track down the history of this important plant, you will learn that cotton has scored in terms of breathing ability, its natural strength and its versatility in human life.  These round white balls produced in tropical areas of Egypt and India and many parts of Africa clothed many civilizations. The Arabic name ‘qutn’ was understood as the English equivalent of cotton.

 

What makes cotton fabrics so appealing? The fibers are very porous and absorbent. It is because of its resilience that it can be washed and reused umpteen times. It is also found in many different varieties depending on its final use. Super soft variety is used for making materials for babies; luxurious variety is for clothing babies so that it is not harsh on the skin. One can get soft Sea Island and Pima cotton too. For jeans and corduroys the rugged and coarse variety is available. Other types of cotton fabrics include the industrial strength canvas material, organdy, satin and velvet, light and chic voile popular in France. One of the finest is Muslin. There are around 23 different varieties of cotton. It is blended with other fibers such as linen, polyester, wool, organdy, muslin, poplin, and satin to blend the best properties of each fiber.
