Cotton Industry
When polyester was discovered to be very versatile, cotton lost its sheen temporarily. With much research and development in textiles polyester cotton was introduced. It was said to have the best qualities of the two materials. Can combining a natural and man-made fabric prove long lasting in the future? The debate continues as pure cotton remerges as the number one fabric for many industries. Somehow it has been sustaining the planet in many ways. The use of polyester cotton in a combined form is definitely outdated. Critics are now debating on how polyester and cotton are more sustainable for the environment. Is cotton the right choice, when so much of toxicity is heaped when the crop is harvested? Or is the synthetic fabric polyester the appropriate choice as it requires less water and more energy consumption to be produced.
In defence of the synthetic fabric it can be said that polyester can be 100 % recycled. Countries that are already doing it include Japan, where garments are recycled. The polyester fibres are being used for post-consumer and post-industrial use. All these make polyester good for the environment.
On the other hand, cotton requires tremendous water for cultivation. It also requires energy for processing. With regular awareness the farmers are now looking at organic methods of farming. After it is processed cotton is used in many ways. Even if its costs more to produce it organically, cotton is more useful. So it is polyester cotton combination the right choice? Consumers decide.
