For cotton produce to reach consumers, the timeline goes back to the production of the crop. Since cotton has been existence for centuries, people have found various ways to enhance the harvest for maximum gains. During the Indus Valley civilization water drawn cylinders, a rather crude method was used to remove the seeds and sperate the cotton. The paintings in Ajanta and Ellora caves in India show how it was done. The modern version of the cotton gin (actually engine) was devised by an American Eli Whitney in the 17th century. He was responsible for producing more cotton and reducing the need for manual labor. Times have changed and the mechanism to produce the bales of cotton has improved. Since the natural fabric has returned to the fashion scene, its regular production is vital to the fashion and textile industries. Hence the importance of Cotton gin has doubled.
It is rather bad news to get that in southern states of US, there is a sharp 57% drop of production due to rainstorms this year. The farmers are likely to be hit as the crop’s yield is not sufficient for local consumption. The fashion needs will have t look at other countries for its continued support. The sale of seeds needed for cotton gin has reduced, thus making the business of production bleak. Chances are that the little material that will be produced from the cotton gin will be expensive this year. Eventually it is the consumer’s pockets that will hurt.
